"Room and Board"
In this piece for The Shirley Jackson Project (edited by Rob Kirby, forthcoming from Ninth Art Press in Fall 2016), I explored how Jackson's depictions of food tap into the illusion of conscious will. This illusion makes it easy for us to believe that we control most things in our lives because we control what we put in our bodies. As you will see in my half of "Room and Board" (the other half, not pictured, is by my husband Asher Craw), Jackson believed that food exerts its own control. And if we can't control what we eat, what can we control?
